Eco-Luxury & Innovation: Securing Sustainable Water at Pine Cay, Turks and Caicos

The Legacy of Pine Cay

Pine Cay is a pristine, privately owned island home to the exclusive Pine Cay resort in the Turks and Caicos Islands. As the pioneer of luxury tourism in the archipelago—with roots tracing back to the 1950s and the establishment of the legendary Meridian Club in the early 1970s—Pine Cay has always balanced high-end hospitality with environmental preservation. On this tranquil island, transportation is strictly limited to electric golf carts and bicycles, preserving the natural beauty of its breathtaking 2-mile (3.2 km) main beach and exclusive private villas.

The Challenge: Fresh Water Scarcity in the Tropics

Like many low-lying limestone islands, the Turks and Caicos face severe freshwater limitations. With a flat landscape that prevents large-scale surface water storage, the island relies on fragile, underground freshwater lenses. These delicate freshwater bodies sit atop saline seawater and are highly vulnerable to destruction from over-extraction, droughts, and tidal waves. Because natural rainfall is limited, securing a reliable, independent source of fresh water is critical for the island’s ongoing development and survival.

The Solution: Next-Generation Turks and Caicos Desalination

To protect this delicate ecosystem while ensuring a flawless guest experience, Pine Cay has revolutionized its infrastructure. By implementing the Efficient Water Maker—our advanced, skid-built, chemical-free desalination solution—the island has secured a reliable supply of fresh water using nothing but the surrounding seawater.

Sustainability in Action: This state-of-the-art desalination system operates using 70% less electricity than traditional methods, setting a new benchmark for eco-friendly, energy-efficient water production in the Turks and Caicos.
