Water for peace.

March 22 is our favourite day of the year: World Water Day.

Water for peace is this year’s theme, as water can create peace or spark conflict. When water is scarce or polluted, or when people have unequal access, tensions can rise between communities and countries. Did you know more than 3 billion people worldwide depend on water that crosses national borders? Yet, only 24 countries have cooperation agreements for all their shared water. When we cooperate on water, we create a positive ripple effect – fostering harmony, generating prosperity and building resilience to shared challenges.

Today we share two examples of how we contribute by realizing water in Gaza and Somalia. We wish you a wonderful World Water Day.

Clean water for 35.000 people in Somalia.

We are proud to share the results of a partnership between Save the Children, Elemental Water Makers and all local stakeholders to realize access to clean water in Hafun, Somalia.

Hafun community in Somalia has been struggling with prolonged droughts, tsunamis and cyclones. Chronic droughts and saltwater intrusion have dried or contaminated most of the wells that previously sustained the population. During times of high demand, the cost of water from far away was exorbitant. Tanker trucks supplied low-quality expensive water from 4-5 hours away.

Together with the NGO Save the Children, Elemental Water Makers designed, built & commissioned a solar desalination solution to serve the population of 35.000 people in Hafun District. The plant can produce 88.000 liters of clean water per day. The seawater desalination plant is a long-term, reliable, and sustainable solution for the water shortage that plagued Hafun district. By working closely with the local authorities and by building local capacity for maintenance, the operational sustainability has been secured.

Elemental Water Response for Gaza.

As reported by UNICEF, “Children and their families are having to use water from unsafe sources that are highly salinated or polluted. Without safe water, many more children will die from deprivation and disease.”

We have sent several Elemental Water Response units to Gaza, in cooperation with different NGO’s, so that decentralized, stand-alone clean water may be made from salt water sources using only the sea and sun.
